Celebrating Matariki

Kereru Class celebrated Matariki today by making soup and bread. In traditional times, Matariki was a season to celebrate and to prepare the ground for the coming year.
Students also put on a Matariki play 'Tane me te Whanau Marama'. Others made flax stars to represent the seven sisters while other students created a poster of the Matariki constellation.
BIG thank you to Katie's Mum (Steph) for helping out with the chopping and bread watching and also thanks to Na (Elizabeth) for the fabulously easy and delicious bread recipe!

Oreo Moon Phases!

On Monday we got into groups of three and used Oreo Cookies to make moon phases.
We used a knife, plate and 6 or 9 Oreo Cookies. We had to make Oreo cookies into the New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter and Waning Crescent and then again New Moon.
Waning means that the moon is getting smaller and Waxing means the moon is getting bigger.
The moon takes 27 days 7 hours and 43 minutes to finish its rotation.
After we had done the task we got to eat the Oreo cookies. Yum!

Healthy Teeth!

Wow what an amazing talk about teeth!
Last week Issac's mum Annemieke came to talk to us about teeth and how to take care of them. She talked to us about decay and what you need to get it teeth, bacteria and sugar.
She also talked to us about the bad things you can get and she told us how to prevent getting it.
Then she told us that you should not rinse our mouths out after we have brushed our teeth because it washes some of the fluoride out.
At the end of the talk we had to answer a little quiz. If we got it right we got a free tooth brush yay! Thank you Annemieke for teaching us about teeth.

Year 5/6 Hockey Tournament

What a fantastic day we had today at the Year 5/6 Inter-school Hockey Tournament! We had six teams entered into the competition and all of the students played brilliantly. The support they gave each other and the team work was great to see. Our Year 6 girls team took out top honours by winning the final against Henley, which came down to nail biting penalty shoot out, and they brought home the trophy! The boys Year 6 team came very close to making the finals but just missed out on points. Huge thank you to the team managers who made sure the teams got to where they needed to be and supported their teams throughout the day!

Clay Workshop

On Tuesday Kereru class went to Founders park to do a clay workshop, with Esther from the Suter Art Gallery. First we looked around looking for patterns on the buildings. After that we got a piece of clay and shaped out our building then we engraved patterns on our house till we were happy with them.
Esther is going to fire them in the kiln and we should have them back for painting in a couple of weeks.
